Downspouts and gutters protect buildings seven days a week throughout the year. They don’t get breaks or days off from channeling rainwater away from our structures. If they didn’t do their job, we would have to deal with expensive and extensive problems related to moisture, such as water damage and mold growth. As long as you keep them maintained well, they will provide years of service that is free of stress and hassle. But like all good things, their services can come to an end eventually no matter how high quality your downspouts and gutters are.
There are several signs that will tell you when it’s time to get your gutters and downspouts replaced. These include numerous cracks, separated gutters, broken fasteners, peeling exterior paint, eroded landscaping, and pooling water. You might be able to patch up things like small cracks and gutter seams, but the time will come when repairs just won’t do. Like this week’s featured client, you will need a complete replacement.
100-Year Old Gutters and Downspouts in Nashville TN
This week’s featured project takes us to a school in Nashville, Tennessee. This school was originally built in 1901. They still had the original fascia and copper gutters, which were more than a hundred years old! Because of the passage of time, they were already starting to fall apart and leak.
Gutters that leak have a huge impact on building owners and their budget. Water will start to pool near the foundation, which will eventually cause it to fail. The roof can get damaged, and basements can get flooded. They can cause soil erosion and swollen siding. Regardless of what damage they cause, they are a threat to the safety and security of any building. Luckily, our team was ready to come in and solve their problems.
Replacing Gutters and Downspouts
The first thing we did was to remove all of the existing gutters and downspouts. We then removed the fascia and replaced it as we tore it off. The work was done in 20-foot sections to avoid opening the building up and causing unwanted leaks. The new fascia will now serve as a sturdy support for the guttering.
After our team installed all the new fascia, we then sealed all the seams and fastener holes, then primed the fascia. We then painted all of it using white exterior paint. This paint will protect the fascia from the elements that they are exposed to every day.
Next, we installed 24 7-inch box gutters. These gutters beautifully blend in with the historic building’s existing architecture while doing the job of directing unwanted water away from the most vulnerable parts of the school. We then finished with commercial 4×5” downspouts, which will work with the gutters to redirect water safely towards the designated drainage areas.
Our crew of six gutter experts were able to successfully complete the project in merely six to seven days. Now, our client no longer has to worry about the costly damage that comes with dysfunctional gutters.
